Rule of Thirds

The Rule of Thirds is basically used for composition of shot purposes and what in the shot is the main focal point.  It is often used in film production where the frame is divided into nine sections ( there is often a grid mode on camcorders) When the shot is divided into the nine sections it helps to frame the image. In most shots which characters are in they place them so that the eyes are 1/3 down of the frame however it isn't necessary and isn't worth trying to achieve in certain shots because of the type of shot.

This shows how the frame is divided into nine sections
